Description:

I’ m having a bit of a ‘Tableau mapping’ week, so after a bit of searching i stumbled across a nice higher education (HE) related dataset to play with. This viz presents the recently published TOP100 QS Best Student Cities rankings in a more visual way. The QS Best Student Cities index ‘aims’ to showcases the best urban destinations for international students, based on a diverse range of indicators grouped into five key categories; QS university Ranking, Student Mix, Desirability, Employer Activity, Affordability and Student View (new for 2017). To be considered for the ranking, each city must have a population of over 250,000 and be home to at least two universities featured in the most recent QS World Rankings. the full methodology behind these tables can be found here.

This #Coffeetableviz filters the data to the TOP10 and integrates the indicator scores into the visual by encouraging the user to click on the TOP10 CITY.

Takeaway:

Montreal is now the world’s #1 student city (according to the QS), bringing an end to Paris’s four-year reign at the top. Multicultural, bilingual, student-centred and inclusive. Canada’s ‘cultural capital’ performs well in all six categories of the QS Best Student Cities Index.

There’s also good news for UK cities this year. Amidst concerns about the impact of Brexit, London climbs two places to rank third, while Edinburgh is 18th and Manchester joint 23rd. The QS suggest that this is partly thanks to the fall in the value of the pound, which means British cities have become more affordable options for international students.

German cities too are on the rise – Berlin climbs to sixth and Munich ninth – while Asia’s leading representative, Seoul, surges six positions to claim fourth place.
